Day of the Dead in the Valley of the Sun

This research project concerns the history of Día de los Muertos in Phoenix, Arizona. I use archival research, oral history interviews, and ethnogaphy to trace the history of Día de los Muertos in Phoenix, Arizona from the early twentieth century to today. I focus on the multicultural collaboration between Mexican American and Native American artists and communities, which has helped revitalize and sustain Day of the Dead in the Valley of the Sun. The project offers a critical reassessment of the holiday’s cultural identity, history, and sociocultural function. This project is currently conceived as a book and accompanying documentary short.
